Home Care Program and Lifestyle Guidelines
for Managing Temporomandibular Dysfunction

You have begun a total health care program designed to help you with your temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) and/or myofascial pain dysfunction (MPD).

This program was developed to include you in the therapeutic process. While it is possible that your condition may have one specific cause, it is more likely that multiple factors are influencing your pain, discomfort, and dysfunction. This program includes home care activities you can do to manage stress, pain, and discomfort.  Lifestyle guidelines are presented which address eating and other habits, posture and body mechanics, stress, sleep, and exercise.

Many lifestyle habits and behaviors have been found to contribute to or cause muscle tension and pain in the head, face and neck and to contribute to TMD/MPD. You can assist the healing process by incorporating these recommendations into your daily life.

I. Home Care Practices: Home care practices are simple activities that can improve your experience of pain and discomfort and overall sense of well-being. Click here for details.

II.  Lifestyle Guidelines: Lifestyle guidelines address jaw movements and habits which may reinjure your joints, muscles, or ligaments. Click here for details.
