Surface electromyography is considered the “gold standard" for measuring muscle activity of cervical and masticatory muscles, both at rest and during function.

It utilizes sensing electrodes which are placed on the skin, allowing clinicians to directly and accurately monitor muscle activity. This is more accurate than conventional manual palpation or touch which can provide only gross assessments of muscle activity.

Excessively high masticatory muscle activity is common in symptomatic patients when compared to normal subjects. Imbalances between right and left sides for the same sets of muscles are also common in pain patients.

Surface electromyography is very safe and comfortable. It gives us a baseline for muscle activity and an insight to where the problem is coming from in pain patients.

Electromyographic Analysis (EMG)
In general, the electrical activity of masticatory muscle during maximal bite is significantly weaker in patients with functional disorders of the masticatory system than non symptomatic subjects.
